The proposals

The Thriving Greenspaces team together with an Architect and Landscape Architect, and with support from our team, have developed proposals for an ‘activity hub’ on the bowling green area of the Links. A consultation has gone live today to share the proposals and get feedback from the community.

This is the first consultation that focuses exclusively on the layout of the activity hub, the specific features within it and concepts for the redevelopment of the pavilion building; unlike the previous masterplan consultation that took place last Summer which looked at the park as a whole.

Redeveloping this corner of Leith Links, which has sat dormant and increasingly derelict for over a decade, is a unique opportunity full of potential. We believe these proposals fulfil that potential and would provide a transformational facility that Leith could be proud of, but that would also be a destination for the city and wider region.

They showcase an inspiring, open-access space for all abilities, genders and age groups and a home for a range of activities that currently don’t have one in this part of the city; wheeled sports, such as skateboarding, rollerskating, scooting and BMX, but also bouldering, parkour, callisthenics and table tennis.

Many of these were fringe activities in the past, but are increasingly moving into the mainstream, with several becoming Olympic sports for the first time. They provide alternatives to more traditional, often team-based sports which are already thriving in the local area.

The overwhelming support for these type of facilities in last years masterplan consultation along with previous community engagement run by Leith Links Community Council is the only reason we’ve been able to get to this stage and we’d encourage everyone who supports them to take part again this time and help keep up the momentum.

The consultation is open for 6 weeks, after which the designs will be finalised and an application made for Planning Consent, before the process of securing funding can begin.
